Join our lab!

We have a fantastic team of undergraduates who play an integral role in our research. We periodically accept new research assistants to assist in the lab for course credit or to volunteer. We usually accept students at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. Join us as a Graduate Student

Dr. Ha is accepting graduate students for Fall 2021. Graduate students in our lab often participate in our ongoing research projects and are encouraged to develop and implement their own independent research projects within our laboratory. Join us as an Undergraduate Student (PSY 399 or PSY 499)

This course is designed to give undergraduate students hands-on experience conducting research in psychology.  Through attending weekly lab meetings and working in teams, students learn how research ideas are generated and specific hypotheses formed, research studies are designed to test these hypotheses, various research methods are used, data are collected and analyzed, and results are presented at meetings and in scientific publications.  This course is expected to be especially useful for students planning on pursuing a career in psychology and research.

Students interested in applying for a Research Assistant position should meet the following criteria:

  • good academic standing

  • can commit to a minimum of 6 hours per week 

  • interested in pursuing graduate education & research in psychology

  • conscientious, curious, and able to learn through hands-on experience

All students interested in a RA position through PSY 399 of 499 are required to submit an online application to obtain permission before enrolling in the class.

What will you get to do in the @HEART Lab?

Undergraduate research assistants in the @HEART Lab have the opportunity to participate in a variety of research experiences. Research assistants are exposed to all stages of the research process, including learning how research ideas are generated, how research studies are designed to test hypotheses, what research methods are used, and how data are collected and analyzed. Typical RA opportunities include attending weekly meetings, discussing research articles, participating in active data collection, entering data, and participating on data coding teams. Undergraduate students in the lab also have the opportunity to work on individual research projects under the mentorship of Dr. Ha and graduate students, including literature reviews, data analysis projects, and honors theses.

What are past RAs doing now?

Former undergraduate research assistants in the @HEART Lab have gone on to succeed in a wide range of careers. Lab alumni have joined various graduate programs including Clinical Psychology PhD programs, Masters in Counseling, and Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy programs. Additionally, former research assistants have gone on to work for the Department of Child Safety.
